Hypotension is the medical term for low blood pressure condition in which the blood pressure remains persistently low i.e. the systolic pressure is less than 100 mm Hg and the diastolic pressure is less than 60 mm Hg consistently.
It could be a temporary condition also caused by occasional loss of fluid (i.e. through diarrhoea, burns and vomiting) or following heavy blood loss through some other causes like injury etc. Only when this level of BP remains normally low that the person is said to be hypotensive.
There are other reasons also for persistently low BP which includes a heart condition called myocardial infection, obstruction of blood flow to heart and lungs due to blood clot, severe infections and allergic reactions.
Sometimes, this symptom is manifest when a person faints due to excessive vomiting, blood loss etc. In extreme cases of low blood pressure, it is difficult to even record the fall in the B.P. since in this condition the pulse goes very weak, urine production decreases drastically and may even cause circulatory failure.
Having known about the basics of hypertensive and hypo-tensive conditions, it is better if we also learn about the human circulatory system including heart to know how the body regulates blood pressure.
