Low blood pressure that is consistently low is known as hypotension. In comparison to hypertension (high blood pressure), hypo-tension is not a major problem although at times it can be quite annoying and uncomfortable.
Hypotension is of the following two types.
- Postural Hypotension
- Nutritional Hypotension
Postural Hypotension:
Postural hypotension sets in abruptly and can be troublesome. It can be caused by the following factors:
- Overdose of anti-hypertensive drugs taken for reducing the BP
- Pregnancy complications
- Consequence of Diabetes Mellitus
- At times due to Arteriosclerosis.
- Physical reaction to certain sudden emotion.
- Over exposure in heat
Nutritional Hypotension:
As the name suggests this kind of hypotension is due to unbalanced nutrition.
It is the lack of adequate nutrients that causes this syndrome. This means diet deficient in calories, proteins, vitamin-C, and B, etc. Of all the nutrients lack of pantothenic acid (a vitamin of B6 group) most rapidly causes low blood pressure.
There are other reasons also for persistently low BP which includes a heart condition called myocardial infection, obstruction of blood flow to heart and lungs due to blood clot, severe infections and allergic reactions.
Some more causes of low blood pressure are:
Severe inflammation of organs inside the body:
Pancreas is an organ inside the body which when gets severely inflamed is called acute pancreatitis. In this condition, fluid leaves the blood to enter the inflamed tissues around pancreas as well as the abdominal cavity, depleting the volume of blood, causing low blood pressure.
Moderate or severe bleeding:
Bleeding resulting from surgical complications, trauma, or gastrointestinal abnormalities such as tumors, ulcers, etc, can quickly deplete an individual’s body of blood, causing orthostatic hypotension or low blood pressure.
Dehydration:
Moderate to severe dehydration may cause low blood pressure. |
